New New Doctor Who, episode 10

Well, Love and Monsters was weird, wasn't it? It's not that I disapprove of the concept, but it sort of irritated me in the same way as that episode of Buffy that was dominated by Jonathan.

There were funny bits, which I approved of (notably the benny Hill style running from monsters at the beginning, and the bit where Elton asked Ursula out). And it was quite sweet too. But it was... well, a bit silly. Peter Kay could have been funny but was just rather cheesy.

This *was* the Blue Peter monster, though I remain adamant that the Wire in The Idiot's Lantern only stole face because they took the idea from the kid who designed the Blue Peter monster! I felt as though they'd put this episode aside just to have the Blue Peter monster in it, and it wouldn't have mattered what kind of monster it turned out to be - that just doesn't seem fair.

I felt that the narrative choices were wrong in a lot of places - e.g. it just seemed silly for Ursula to get trapped in a paving slab at the end. Sure enough, it's the sort of thing that might happen in a sci-fi/fantasy sort of programme, I suppose... but it felt unrealistic more for emotional reasons.

Nevertheless there were some good things. LINDA were great as a group while they were all happy. Tennant didn't have a chance to annoy me. Rose's hair was pretty at the end. And most of all, Marc Warren is devastatingly cute and actually a good actor, so he made it watchable throughout.

But still, it just didn't seem like DW.

No complaints about the acting here. I wouldn't be sorry to see Mark Warren become the companion in the future - but what would happen to Ursula? I suppose they could mount her on the wall of the Tardis. She made me think of Lady Cassandra, incidentally.

But the plot. Oh dear.

Yes indeed, it's the plot that's the problem. But you're right, Elton would make a good companion :)
